The Italic sanctuary located in Civitella, in the municipality of Campochiaro, is a cult centre dedicated to Hercules, of particular importance in the Sannio pentro.
Located on the slopes of the Matese, it shows a position of particular topographic interest in relation to the roads that meet in the plain of Boiano (the Pescasseroli-Candela cattle track, the minor route that descends towards the Adriatic coast reaching Larino and the one that, bypassing the Matese , arrives on the side of Campania and Monte Cila) evidently connected to its role as a privileged place of market and trade. The area attests a frequentation from the VII-VI century BC. and construction in the 4th century BC of an accommodation on two terraces, bounded by walls in a polygonal structure, on which the buildings are built and which can be accessed through two entrances (to the west and east). The lower terrace is dominated by a long porticoed building with a scenic façade open on the esplanade below.
