The castle stands in the central part of the village on a sandstone boulder. According to some researchers, the castle of Civitacampomarano may have been built around the XIV century under the hegemony of Charles I of Anjou. Other scholars instead believe that the fortress was built around the second half of the thirteenth century according to the fact that the building has architectural elements typical of this period.
